Using a poem of Walt Whitman’s ‘Song of Myself’ as a loose framework, and including references to TS Eliot, Emily Dickinson and Greek mythology, it is witty and frequently hilarious. Summarising the events of this novel gives little clue to its essential nature and richness. ![]() Enlisting the help of his friends Radar and Ben, and Margo’s friend Lacey, Q embarks on a search for Margo which fast becomes obsessive, culminating in a twenty-three hour drive at breakneck speed from Florida to a paper town called Agloe in New York. However, the clues that she leaves for Q suggest that the Margo that everyone thinks they know, may be far from the person Margo really is, and Q fears for her life. Shortly after, Margo disappears, not for the first time. One memorable night, Margo appears at Q’s window and insists he accompany her on an evening of revenge after her boyfriend has dumped her in favour of her best friend. Friends in childhood, Margo and Q now move in different circles: Margo is reckless, popular and ‘cool’, while Quentin is clever and nerdish, hanging round the school band’s practice room, listening to them despite being tone deaf. Plot Quentin Jacobsen (‘Q’ to his mates) is in his last year of high school in Orlando, Florida. Paper Towns was published in 2008, four years before The Fault in Our Stars. He skirts the stock coming of-age character arc – Quentin’s eventual bravery is not the revelation. Green builds tension through both the twists of the active plot and the gravitas of the subject. Michael Cart, Booklist The mystery of Margo – her disappearance and her personhood – is fascinating, cleverly constructed, and profoundly moving. In addition, he’s a superb stylist, with a voice perfectly matched to his amusing, illuminating material. That he brings it off is testimony to the fact that he is not only clever and wonderfully witty but also deeply thoughtful and insightful. Yet, if anything, the thematic stakes are higher here, as Green ponders the interconnectedness of imagination and perception, of mirrors and windows, of illusion and reality. Paper Town By John Green Book Summary: There are echoes of Green’s award-winning Looking for Alaska (2005): a lovely, eccentric girl a mystery that begs to be solved by clever, quirky teens and telling quotations (from Leaves of Grass, this time) beautifully integrated into the plot.

![]() The following afternoon, they go to Van Houten's house, but are shocked to find out he is a mean-spirited alcoholic. Hazel and Gus arrive in Amsterdam and Gus confesses his love for Hazel during a romantic meal sponsored by Van Houten. ![]() After a medical setback, Hazel's doctors eventually allow the trip. Gus then surprises Hazel with tickets to Amsterdam, acquired from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Van Houten explains that he is only willing to answer their questions in person. Weeks later, Gus tells Hazel he has tracked down Van Houten's assistant, Lidewij, and has corresponded with Van Houten via email. Its author, Peter Van Houten, retreated to Amsterdam following the novel's publication and has not been heard from since. Gus gives Hazel Counter Insurgence, while Hazel recommends An Imperial Affliction, a novel about a cancer-stricken girl named Anna that parallels her own experience, but has an abrupt ending. The two bond over their hobbies and agree to read each other's favorite books. There Hazel meets Augustus "Gus" Waters, who lost a leg to bone cancer but has since apparently been in remission. Believing she is depressed, her mother Frannie urges her to attend a weekly cancer patient support group. Hazel Grace Lancaster is a teenager, living in the suburbs of Indianapolis, who has thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. It was released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 16, 2014, and earned $42 million in total domestic video sales. The film was number one at the box office during its opening weekend and grossed $307 million worldwide against a budget of $12 million. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise given to Woodley's and Elgort's performances and chemistry together, as well as the screenplay. The Fault in Our Stars had its world premiere at Seattle International Film Festival on May 16, 2014, and was released in the United States on June 6, 2014, by 20th Century Fox. Pittsburgh doubled for all of the scenes set in Indianapolis, Indiana, the novel's setting, as well as for some interior scenes set in Amsterdam. Principal photography began on August 26, 2013, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a few additional days in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, before concluding on October 16, 2013. Woodley plays Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen-year-old cancer patient forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she meets and subsequently falls in love with Augustus Waters, another cancer patient, played by Elgort.ĭevelopment began in January 2012 when Fox 2000, a division of 20th Century Fox, optioned the rights to adapt the novel into a feature film. The film stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, with Laura Dern, Sam Trammell, Nat Wolff and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. The Fault in Our Stars is a 2014 American coming-of-age romantic tragedy film directed by Josh Boone, based on John Green's 2012 novel of the same name. Initially the warrior, whose name is not given, agrees to fight alongside the Roman army to help defeat barbarians from a rival tribe, but he returns home to defend his village when a Roman general decides to abandon the warrior's village and ignore the barbarians to pursue glory elsewhere. The series tells the story of a Thracian warrior who leads a rebellion against the Roman Republic. ![]() DeKnight, who served as an executive producer alongside Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. It started to gain pace around episode four and the final episode, with the title Kill Them All, is a real stunner, a hellish ending to a show that offers more than just gore.Spartacus is an American historical epic series created by Steven S. It's amazing just how compelling this show is. The friction between the cellar-dwelling gladiatori slaves and their Roman masters living above gives Spartacus a weird bloodsoaked Upstairs Downstairs feeling. It's detailed enough to communicate the power of the arena battles and the arid, drought-plagued region (the lack of water and the value of even a few drops brings Dune to mind). But what's happening in the foreground is what you should be looking at. Rome wasn't built in a day, but the city of Capua, where Spartacus takes place, sometimes looks like it was CGI-rendered in an afternoon – I've only seen the show on review discs or streamed from review sites, so maybe it'll look better on Blu-Ray or HDTV. I've even grown to love the look of the show, the first thing many mocked. It's no surprise that the pair are booked for a spinoff prequel show. Both Lawless and Hannah sink their teeth into some meaty dialogue while chewing up as much scenery as possible. Former Xena Warrior Princess Lawless is back on familiar turf: a TV show shot in New Zealand with a lot of swordplay and produced (along with Sam Raimi) by her husband Robert Tapert. The real acting honours are nabbed fair and square by John Hannah and Lucy Lawless as decadent, conniving couple Batiatus and Lucretia. Besides, no one is going to mistake this for a documentary. They use strigils in episode one so that's authentic enough for me. Pretty much all I can recall from O Level Latin is that Romans used strigils in their bathhouses. Characters may appear one-dimensional, but if you've followed Spartacus' nemesis Crixus or his trainer Doctore, it's clear there is far more to them than meets the eye. Besides, Shakespearean dialogue wouldn't sit right. There's a lot of corny tough talk among the gladiators but for me it rings true: these were not the brightest bunch and, as they are often seen with no other possessions than a loincloth, tough talk is all they have. There is no room for ambiguity here: this is blood (and other bodily fluids) and sand, not oysters and snails.īritish-born Andy Whitfield makes for a great, stoic Spartacus (the actor has recently been given the all-clear on his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma so now hopefully he can enjoy a long career and we can expect more Spartacus). Here it fills the entire season – and without the coy subversion of the famous speech Laurence Olivier gives to Tony Curtis. In Stanley Kubrick's comparatively anaemic 1960 film version, Spartacus' time as a gladiator takes up around 40 minutes of the three-hour-plus running time. But you have to watch what they do next, even if you don't like them. Yes it's brutally violent with loads of sex and swearing, and full of characters with few, if any, redeeming features. Besides, what good is a plasma screen if you're not going to see plasma on it? I wasn't expecting what came next: Spartacus: Blood & Sand is a terrific show – compelling, smart, intentionally funny. So, I thought, as this is clearly the goriest thing ever on TV (and only 13 episodes long), I'll watch it: it'll be a low-rent landmark in telly history. If a contemporary cop show painted the screen red with such wild abandon as Spartacus, it'd be dragged kicking and screaming off the air. I've always liked the inventive ways TV shows have gone about showing explicit bloodshed, be it in microscopic detail in CSI or the bottled grue of True Blood. Even in context it's often ludicrously OTT. Out of context the copious bloodshed looked ridiculous. What first got me interested in Spartacus was the gore, lovingly displayed and mocked on Charlie Brooker's show ( here's his review for the Guardian). Even the company responsible, Starz, sounds like a strip club, further underselling this show – although keen TV followers will know Starz is also responsible for Party Down, one of the finest comedies of recent years. A 300-style take on the Spartacus story wasn't really going to head straight to the top of many viewers' "must see" list. Sometimes low expectations can be a wonderful thing. ![]() When the service provider is recommending a package that has the latest services and can be delivered on a monthly basis, its a relief, he says. There are lots of services you can buy the consumer has no idea what to do. Witteveen says most consumers are interested primarily in antivirus solutions. The service providers are playing more of a role in delivering security to business users and consumers. Very often they are calling them when they have something wrong with their PC. Their Internet provider, whoever that may be a broadband provider or cable company or telco they look to them for a lot of their services. The consumer, as well as the SMB, doesnt have the expertise to keep up with todays security needs, says Witteveen. Deutsche Telekom AG is offering both services, he says. Last fall, the company ventured into the enterprise market. The companys consumer security solutions have been delivered as a service for five years. The customer is downloading a Charter PC security solution, however the whole backend management of updating the product, making sure the policies are in place and the infrastructure is in place is all done by FSecure, explains Witteveen. Charter Communications markets our service either as a value-added product or a bundle for their high-speed Internet. Thats where F-Secures products and services come into play.Īmong its partners is Charter Communications Inc. Once they have done that, they want to go further into the network of the business or home. The firewall is the first step where they touch the water with their toes, says F-Secure Vice President Travis Witteveen. More Vulnerabilities mean More Security Measuresį-Secure doesnt offer managed firewall services a fairly crowded space. Five years ago, the company established FSecure Online Solutions to deliver its managed security portfolio through telcos and ISPs. One managed security services provider targeting ISPs and telcos is F-Secure Corp. published last year.įurthermore, private-labeled managed network security services available from specialized providers now offer telcos and other resellers like ISPs and even VARs an easier path to protecting customer networks and their own profit margins, which have been squeezed with the commoditization of telephony and bandwidth services. The carrier-based managed security services market is expected to grow to $570 million by 2008, according to projections Yankee Group Research Inc. But, say analysts and vendors, there is a larger opportunity for telcos in offering managed firewalls, intrusion detection, intrusion prevention, vulnerability scanning, antivirus, DoS protection, content filtering and antispam services. The continuing challenge businesses face in network security risk management has been identified as an opportunity for carriers its one they have addressed in the last four or five years with IP VPNs primarily. ![]() I think this goes a long way to showing the impression that souma was able to leave on him. Seeing as kuga is a chef that specializes in chinese cuisine, I can imagine that he will come up with some dishes that not even tsukasa might have thought about. So one might think that that would help him to somewhat have a chance against tsukasa. The main ingredient ended up falling in kuga's favor, with it being green tea. While the Elite Ten Council was first mentioned in Chapter 2, it took one hundred seventeen chapters for the entire Elite Ten to be formally introduced. This picture is also used in the series itself. A silhouette of all the Elite Ten Council members could be seen in the one-shot of the series. The only member shown was Julio Rossi Saotome, who was the best Italian chef in the Academy. In the One-shot, the Elite Ten is comprised of the top students for a specific cuisine field. Even then, other alumni who attained even the 2nd seat easily found success in their culinary careers. For many, the 1st seat is the highest honor possible in the academy and most successful chefs in the culinary world have been a 1st seat, including Gin Dōjima and Kojirō Shinomiya. Inside of the group itself, members are placed in a ranked order with the 1st seat being the best student in the entire academy. However, their power in the Academy is much more powerful, enough so that they can formally request a new director of the campus if the majority of the council votes in favor and overrule the director's wishes himself. That being said, even the lecturers have less authority than they do and must obey anything they say. Their authority in the academy is second only to the director, Senzaemon Nakiri. They are also given a large budget by Tōtsuki Culinary Academy for them to utilize in any conceivable reason as long as the purchases are related to cooking and food research. Because of their status in the academy, they have certain freedoms when carrying out personal projects such as Erina Nakiri's kitchen expansion project, which resulted in the demolition and disbanding of many Tōtsuki clubs with famed history. This organization is responsible for handling the academy's internal evaluations, including judging the achievements based on the student presentations in the academy grounds as well as helping organize events including the Tōtsuki Autumn Election. The Elite Ten is an illustrious group of students in Tōtsuki comprised of the ten best students in the entire academy. ![]() As the two scientists who discover the comet, Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio palpably communicate alarm and frustration, maintaining their characters’ bedrock humanity even as the film casts them ever further into the absurd. Where Don’t Look Up finds its strength is in its lead performances, which can’t be undone even by the film’s exhausting, rapid-fire editing and McKay’s aggressive indicating toward his own punchlines. Simply making fun of pop stars and pundits and Trumpism is easy and ineffectual, as either parody or polemic. His film needn’t have offered some actionable strategy for combating climate change apathy, but it could have been more daring or nuanced in its targeting of that indifference. But there’s less instructive value in that observation than McKay seems to think there is. The joke, I suppose, is that even when something isn’t our fault, we will still fail to embrace whatever tactics might exist to stop its happening. Much time is spent in the film attempting to address that imbalance: the point is not the comet itself, but rather the thwarted, vain, too-late efforts to stop it. (Namely, us.) While there are certainly comparisons to be drawn between how McKay’s characters react to their imminent doom and how we in the real world are responding to ours, Don’t Look Up’s act of God sort of lets us off the hook, blame wise. A comet strike is a random event born of the universe’s chaos-quite unlike climate change, which has obvious causal agents. It’s easy to see the metaphor here, though there’s a problem in the design. The masses won’t accept what’s happening, even when credible and credentialed scientists cry from the mountaintops that they’re doomed. What the pop star is singing about is a massive comet that’s hurtling toward Earth, while the feckless ninnies in Washington try to dismiss the disaster or, later, monetize it. The skewering has to be surgically precise to work, and precision is not a mode McKay seems capable of. The tricky thing about satire is that it’s really tricky. Whatever broadly worthy message the movie has is drowned out by a parade of movie-star mugging and stale pop culture jokes. But as he did with The Big Short and Vice, McKay lacquers Don’t Look Up with an impenetrable layer of smugness. There has been a curious dearth of movies that look intently at climate change, so McKay’s intentions are noble. The film is a long, overweeningly arch satire of government negligence and intransigence of the media’s complicity in allowing that to be the political norm and of a widespread American ethos that refuses to recognize the waters lapping at our feet, the fires tearing through our neighbors’ homes, for what they are.Īs subject matter, it’s entirely necessary. Don’t Look Up (in theaters December 10, Netflix December 24) is an allegory for climate change, a man-made mess that those same men seem hellbent on denying. Having had his fill of past disasters-the 2008 financial crisis and the bloody reign of Dick Cheney-director Adam McKay has turned his attention to a current catastrophe.
